new paper published last week supporting a new-ish theory that adhd is potentially a circadian rhythm disorder not only does the paper demonstrate strong correlations between adhd symptomatology and sleep disturbances, it also suggests a novel adjunct treatment path - intervention studies showed that adhd symptoms can be significantly reduced by advancing the circadian rhythm of study participants (bright light therapy, melatonin, fixed wake/sleep times, exercise) this paper particularly piqued my interest, as there is some discussion in the scientific community that adhd is an alternative phenotype that has its own evolutionary advantage (hunter vs farmer, popularized by thom hartmann). if adhd is typically characterized by late sleep times and wake times, it would track with this other evolutionary theory that adhd is a representation of an old phenotype optimized for nomadic hunters. people with adhd have higher attention to detail, sensitivity to change, and impulsivity - offering a significant advantage to nomadic tribal hunting cultures https://x.com/BrandonLuuMD/status/2000895311125078085 https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychiatry/articles/10.3389/fpsyt.2025.1697900/full

ADHD as a circadian rhythm disorder: evidence and implications for chronotherapy circadian phase can be successfully advanced in ADHD populations. Melatonin and bright light therapy has advanced DLMO in both children and adults with ADHD. Emerging data correlate phase advancement with ADHD symptom improvement, and winter trials suggest circadian preference shifts best predict symptom improvement. Sleep programs improve ADHD symptoms, sleep quality, and functioning in children. Exercise and multimodal protocols for evening chronotypes successfully advance circadian timing in non-ADHD populations and warrant investigation in ADHD. https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychiatry/articles/10.3389/fpsyt.2025.1697900/full

Turns out that when kids w ADHD are properly medicated early on, they actually have the amazing opportunity to gain the executive functioning skills for life that so many of us adults w ADHD missed out on (and still don’t have) bc they’re actually getting the help they need while all that brain growth and those synapse connections are getting made. I’m not saying there weren’t plenty of people who were over medicated as children but I am saying that I personally got fucked not getting diagnosed until my mid 20s and not doing much about it until my early 40s. The more I read and learn about ADHD, the more grateful I am to know what I know now so I can actually help my kids functioning in life skills. The amount of crap I’ve internalized as character flaws that was simply untreated ADHD is horrific. Knowing all this on a logical level is one thing. Figuring out how to heal my inner psyche is a whole other thing though. My body feels things my brain knows better about but knowing how to connect the two can be a struggle. It’s not that I’m unhappy w where I am or who I am. I’ve done a lot of inner work and I do truly like myself, just also in my feelings today as I watch myself do for my kids what I really wish someone had been able to do for me, bc it turns out I was never ‘lazy’ like my teachers thought, but I did have a severe lack of executive functioning skills that I still struggle with deeply. Glad to know I can make the difference in this way for my kids though, and not allow them to fall through the cracks of “so smart and so much potential— if only they’d apply themselves” bullshit, and that’s probably the thing that matters most to me right now.
