one of my fave challenges in a translator’s job — making wordplay jokes work in another language

today’s gem:
- what’s the difference between a piano, a tuna, and glue?
- what?
- you can tune a piano, but you can’t piano a tuna
- what about the glue?
- everyone gets stuck on that

my dear Russian speaking frens, feel free to offer your ideas on how to translate it
i have something in mind but i'm curious to look at what others think
and yes, you can comment in Russian, of course

I translate movies, co-own a loss-making fast-food joint, and raise two kids

yeah, with movies and series it pretty much is

but not when you're translating smth about liquefied natural gas processing or boring legal docs. thank god, all this stuff is in the distant past for me

Translation is a very creative process.

yeah but random puns like this within an otherwise regular dialogue are still okay
the wildest stuff is trying to translate comedy shows

Oh I've seen this joke before! It always astonished me how translators manage to translate some puns 😁 when they manage somehow to keep the meaning - it's double astonishing hahhaa

небольшая подсказка — совсем не обязательно сохранять именно эти слова. Игра слов и юмор важнее сохранения исходных слов.
Я в своем варианте оставил только пианино. Остальные два заменил

- в чем разница между пианино, тунцом и клеем?
- в чем?
- пианино можно настроить, а тунца нет.
- а клей?
 - все  застревают/залипают на этом вопросе 
или 
-этот вопрос никого не отпускает
