I think the real problem with Elon is that he lacks class. He is tacky. He got a lot of money but doesn't know how to behave. 
People can break up quietly, they can be enemies without making a public spectacle. People used to know this.

I'm of the belief the entire DOGE thing was staged and the actual initial goal of Musks involvement was:

- Musk gets information on government procurement contracts for software and space tech. That's the only thing of value for him and his business. Cutting government spending was never feasible but this might have been a kickback for support during the election.

- Trump and Rs learn where the slush fund was. Read any book on especially on foreign involvement in government, and there's always a global slush fund necessary to funnel money out. That random office that had major D senators on a Saturday protesting. That's the one.

Him and Trump aren't that stupid and were advised to make this a public spectacle. The issue with people is they have Gell-Mann amnesia and forget political people lie all the time especially when it comes to goals. We just had 20 years of this with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

My thought is with Tesla sales dropping in the EU, they needed a public breakup so Musk could gain trust back in that market. Also it seems likely a backdoor deal with China is being worked out, and I imagine a component where some amount of EVs will be open to US markets, dropping Tesla's market share. They really need to boost sales in Europe and this seems like a viable strategy.

These guys have economic advisors on payroll so if even I could come up with "pretend you guys fight and make more money later on" I'm sure they did.
