Didn’t have enough food for the villagers, got penalized for it when I stoked and the game took away over 100 people.

I had 900 and once I stoked without enough food, I’m down to 780 now so I can’t send anyone to chop/food since the rest are in lumber and farming and went down number wise on those as well.

ahh gotcha. so you'll have to remove villagers from your camps, so that you'll have enough again to go chopping.

Ahhh gotcha. So next time I stoke, will it go back to 900 or the 950 I spent to get up to? It’s a tad unclear as to what would be the next move to get back up number wise.
Would it also be possible to take them from the lumber and farm instead of active missions?

so you still have the huts so you just need extra 2 food for each new villager to join back and move into your huts that are available.
You may need to move villagers out of your camps to get the food. up to you.
