I don’t know a ton about Ross Ulbricht. Reasonable friends of mine outside of crypto are appalled, noting that he attempted murder. Reasonable friends of mine within crypto are celebrating. I get the divisiveness of the dark money aspect here (the for and against). But is the murder part true?

Apparently he paid $650k of Bitcoin to pay for 5 assassinations But the case was thrown out because the agents investigating it tried to pocket the BTC which kinda leaves it up in the air (Based on very little exposure to the topic)

he was never convicted of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire (and nobody was hurt). there are some details that make it very unclear what happened, including the gov making things up. regardless, most supporters simply believe that his sentencing was overly harsh and that he has shown genuine remorse. https://warpcast.com/matthewb/0x677a1800

@tldr the "free ross" movement is this generation's "hack the planet" version of the "free kevin" from the 1990s The murder part is true and is regarded as an inconvenient truth b/c thought two of the six "hits" were FBI agents trying to entrap him. He was pardoned literally due to the unconditional support of the libertarian movement for Trump this past election. I guess when you control the House, executive branch, and judicial system, you can shape policy however you see fit. It certainly feels like we're approaching a technocratic plutocracy every day in 2025.

I wonder how much money he still has. He certainly has a bag of btc somewhere.. And indeed he did try to commit some murders. Not sure if I rejoice or not atm. it is valid to say that someone sent messages about murder, but one needs to exculpate everyone with that capacity to send messages, of which there are multiple bad faith actors, beyond a doubt.

Yea I’ve been stuck here as well. By I believe most standards he is a criminal (I might get lynched here for saying this, but yolo). Maybe didn’t deserve as harsh of a sentence. But he allowed illegal commerce knowingly and willingly.

To see people cheer for RU’s release makes me ill. 6 people died from opioids bought on SR. My sister died of opioids. Her son took his life because of opioids. Crypto has devolved into a sea of morale depravity. The so called industry is nothing more than a cabal of society’s worst. Following crypto requires logging into a cesspool.
