Anyone using Element, RocketChat, or Mattermost instead of Slack? What’s your experience been like?

I use Element for several chat groups. It's... okay. It's no Discord, but I abstractly like the Matrix protocol. I'm not ultrabullish on it, but I'd like for it to be more successful than it is.

Upside: There are several Matrix clients/servers, but Element is the most up to date and complete one. The experience is somewhat closer to IRC than it is to Slack. Downside: It can be slow/janky especially on older machines, but it has gotten pretty good. Progress has been moderately slow, given the age of the protocol. It's not really designed to be a Slack replacement as much as Rocket Chat, it's more designed to be an open protocol that is usable in a lot of different contexts.

Yeah RocketChat seems the closest to the features we use in Slack from what I've seen.

I haven't used it but my gut feel is that it sounds like a better starting point. Would love to hear how your experience goes!

I'll let you know if we go this route. Not loving the recent changes to slack and in general have just been trying to move away from foreign companiy's services. I don't have complete control over the decision making but I have a lot of sway
