fascinating to see an OG farcaster trend, screenshot essays, rapidly emerge on X. on FC, these initially surfaced due to (imo) a subpar threading experience and limited characters. on X, these surface due to subpar external link experience despite superior threading experience and unlimited characters. thoughts?

Screenshot essays have been on X for a long time now. I don't think of them as a strictly FC trend at all

first platform I noticed screenshot essays on was actually Instagram, with the "create" feature allowing a text-only post on stories people crave substance, but like a more casual representation than a perma-linked blog post

For me, I first noticed this concept back when X was still Twitter

Another benefit of screenshot is that image gets algo boosted on X. And also stands out.

i think people do it for 2 reasons. the formatting flexibility one less tap to consume vs threading/expand to read i have not seen data on the second, but i would assume based on my habits, that people consume thru the feed at a higher rate

I’ve noticed this too and really like it Thinking of work arounds paying for premium X features for example: live-streaming long videos vs paying to post long videos 🤷🏽‍♂️

i discovered screenshot essays on twitter before fc. imo, threads were over used at a point where the content has become spammy, repetitive, framing etc - though the experience to read was great - people stopped opening them. so folks have started posting quality content in just single image to read and it slowly started to pick up. i remember tools being built to share content in a nice screenshot format too.

Interesting. I don't like that you can't copy and paste.

Screenshot essays are great for in-feed longer form and much-appreciated from voices I respect. An excellent workaround for the subpar linking experience on X, for text content at least. Double-approval for anyone who artfully formats their essay. SCREENSHOT ESSAY LETTERHEADS PLS PLS PLS.

My gut says it's related to the recent algo changes that favor tiktok-like content, and thus media (images) in general
