okay i researched this one, too :) Google+ Circles was aesthetically A+ but introduced way too much cognitive overload for users: had to remember circle membership, decide appropriate content for each circle, maintain social categorization, and then make a sharing decision for every post. WAY too much work. WAY too much maintenance.

should never have been the main focal point but an additive to the experience more features could've slowly been introduced over time that helped people manage more + avoid introducing too high of a learning curve or initial commitment
