more features could've slowly been introduced over time that helped people manage more + avoid introducing too high of a learning curve or initial commitment

Google+ Circles was aesthetically A+ but introduced way too much cognitive overload for users: had to remember circle membership, decide appropriate content for each circle, maintain social categorization, and then make a sharing decision for every post. 

WAY too much work. WAY too much maintenance.

haha you were def an intended power user of G+ then! i agree with @ted that they asked the user to do waaay too much upfront and that's why they ultimately failed
