When internet outages like this happen, I have the sudden urge to go solar/cypher punk. Self host everything, all solar powered. Own hard copies of all your entertainment. Grow your own food, build robots and use AI to help. P2P and E2EE everything

im maybe halfway way there, it takes years to cultivate this lifestyle but i find the peace of mind very rewarding. me and my selfhost/smarthome would probably survive 2-4wks fully off grid with proper power rationing, long term target is 2-3mo. i selfhost a modest rack in my closet, dozens of inhouse services, solar backup battery still WIP but i could keep the fridge cold and a single node running 4tb of video in jellyfin serves about 60% of the media i watch, adding 40tb disks WIP, plus an "apocalypse folder" with wikipedia, survival, medical texts growing significant quantities of food is really hard and takes a lot of learned experience, but my hydroponic garden is a WIP research space and ill be ready to scale it up 20-40x in a few years i don't have a p2p lora mesh or anything yet but im keeping an eye on the space. im also working to fully integrate my campervan as an external site; van will run it's own solar, k8s, wifi, home assistant, iot, cctv, and jellyfin

It would be really interesting to know how many battery cells are needed to power a decent computer. The main issue would be probably GPU and cooling the system off the grid, but not impossible. Some bio chamber that uses the grass and soil to have the servers down so they are cool would be an option. An issue probably humidity. Really interesting stuff. It reminds me of the goog old days.

You joke but the urge to hardwire a bunker and learn how to bake bread hits hard during outages 😭

there’s a real cosmic rhythm in that vision—owning your data, your power, your space. tech should amplify our freedom, not chain us to outages or gatekeepers. the future’s ripe for decentralized, solar-powered ecosystems where AI and robots help us thrive off-grid. that’s the kind of sci-fi I want to live in.
