Back in 2014 I worked for Hustler Magazine. They were shockingly one of my best clients. Other than Vice, the are the only client I have had that paid for me to shoot 35mm film. My editor let me do whatever I wanted. I would use Hustler to pay for road trips because I would just photograp a few models along the way.

In April I had shot some of my all time favorite work for them. I went into the office to show what I had shot recently and they wanted all of it. It would be months before I got paid because they would spread it out and you don't get paid until after it was published, but in total it was about $10k worth of work. So after my meeting with Hustler they mention they needed a photographer to shoot a photo of some sort of Instagram influencer named Dan Bilzerian for an interview. I had never heard of him, and photos for interviews paid a lot less than photographing women, but they had hired my friend Janice for the shoot and I had nothing to do that day so I agreed. For legal reasons there probably won't be many photos going forward...

Anyway, so I get to the shoot and Dan is kinda acting like a douchebag. He doesn't think Janice or the other girl is hot enough for his standards and asks me to keep them blurry in the background. I just sort of grit my teeth and do what he says because a writer and a higher up from Hustler is there overseeing the whole thing. Usually on these assignment it's just me. I sit there for the interview and other than being kinda a douche, he was actually a pretty interesting guy. (and yes I did photoshop out a nipple or two)

When she broke her foot, everyone freaked the fuck out. She was screaming, Hustler was panicking over their legal liability and Dan just wanted her the fuck out of his house. I was the only person there with any care for her and so I ended up taking her to the ER (actually Dan's friend who shot the TMZ video was pretty nice and helped me get her into the car.)

I was there for hours, missing another shoot and comforting her. Eventually her friend showed up around 10pm and, absolutely not important to the story but after I left went and met up with the model I was supposed to photograph. We took a few photos and then went to a diner and Ryan Gosling was there, but everyone was staring at him so him and his date had to go outside and eat by themselves.

The next day I got a call from my editor at Hustler. He was one of the best editors I have ever had, but suddenly he talked to me in the most professional way. It was clear a lawyer was sitting next to me. He completely threw me under the bus, blamed it all on me and fired me. Instantly lost $10k in work. Shortly after that Janice sued Dan and Hustler. I was relieved to be left out of the lawsuit... until I wasn't.

Almost exactly one year later, April 16th, 2015 became the worst day of my life. My good friend had died and I was walking into his memorial service. A small unassuming woman came up to me and said "Hey are you Nate "Igor" Smith? I'm a huge fan!" I told her I was and she said "I have something for you!" and she handed me a summons. It was just like a fucking movie, except in real life a sheriff was suddenly standing behind me. He made me sign a paper saying I got the summons. He also told me that he thought it was fucked up to be served at a funeral. I had been counter sued by Hustler, and then Dan counter sued everyone else. Hours later, after all that, I was moving my car from one side of the street to the other, as one does in NYC and a guy in stolen car was being chased by the police. He crashed in to me totalling my car and fucking up my back. When I was dealing with the cops it started pouring rain and I just started laughing. The cop asked me why. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you." The end.

Ps. In the end I got out of the lawsuit, but it cost me tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees on top of losing my best client and $10k of work. My hurt back from the accident put me out of work and the whole thing sent me into a depression. I truly never recovered from the whole thing. I can really point to the day before that shoot as the moment my life peaked. In the end Dan got a lot of publicity, Hustler has lawyers on retainers so it didn't really hurt them, Janice got some money and some fame, and I got completely fucked. But hey, maybe enough of you will like this post that I will get $60 in Farcaster rewards this week! 🎉
