One of those weeks where I'm frustratingly making little progress in my novel. Do you cut the cord and write a different part of the novel, or sit and struggle with a part for a while?

I lean toward working on a different part for a while to clear your thinking. In the past when I’m really struggling with a section, it’s a sign that something isn’t working and I end up binning that part anyway.

It might sound esoteric, but I try to tap into what the work needs from me. Sometimes it needs an extra push to come to life. Others, it needs to be left alone and percolate in the background.

I usually do the equivalent of 'and then they had sex', where I roughly paraphrase what 'should be here', and continue to the bits I understand better. That way I'm both continuing in a linear fashion to maintain momentum or focus, while leaving that problem for future-me.
