If you are looking for an editor, do yourself a favour and go straight to the professionals at Reedsy. Do not pass Fiverr and do not collect your $200 or whatever it is that you think you’re saving. I previously had my manuscript copy edited by an editor on Fiverr for about $500 usd… the outcome was okay, but I had the sneaking suspicion it wasn’t done at a professional level. So I decided to try again. I just requested sample edits and quotes from a few editors on Reedsy. I haven’t even decided on which one to hire yet, and the sample edits are already blowing me away. They caught SO MANY more issues, and they really took the time to explain the grammatical principles behind each one, highlighting areas where the industry standard is x but it’s ultimately my stylistic choice. Reedsy quotes are coming in around $1.5-$3k for a 90k word YA fantasy manuscript. So 3-6x more expensive than my first attempt, but I can DEFINITELY see what the money is being spent on. Not gonna skimp on this.

How do you give gentle constructive feedback to someone who doesn’t seem to have a basic grasp of fiction writing? Someone joined our local writers’ group and submitted a piece that I paraphrase below, but the gist is very similar. A man sits in his living room. He is watching TV and drinking beer. There is a knock on the door and he goes to answer it. It is his ex-girlfriend. “Hello, can I come in” “Yes, you can come in,” says the man. The woman sits down. “Can I offer you a drink” says the man. “Yes that would be nice” says the woman. … and so on for the next 1k words. No concept of scene structure, interiority, dialogue… where would you even start providing feedback? I normally try to make a “shit sandwich” by giving nice feedback first, and I’m really racking my brain here.
