They are creating new cost functions.

The world is full of legacy cost functions that we spend our lives optimizing: Networth, progeny, GDP, territory, etc.

What if we could create systems that optimize for securing a global computer? Funding public goods? Provable oracles? Sustainable natural systems and communities?

We can just create new cost functions.

This is something that leftist ideas always dreamed of but lacked the technology to achieve: Creating new cost functions.

It's much easier for political systems to operate within established cost functions, even if they're toxic.
