I've used iPhone for ~10 years but switched to Samsung/Android ~5 years ago. Massive upgrade. I still use Macbook, but on earphones, chargers, keyboard, mouse, monitor, pretty much in everything else Xiaomi wins over every Apple product. https://youtu.be/neIYdLysqlk?si=og4N6w4rQVAO_lzC

Funny, I used android for 10 years then switched to iPhone. :D I liked android for value and customization, but Apple seems to respect their user's privacy and autonomy much more than Google.

I think you have a good point regarding privacy.

Aside from Apple's incredible marketing, I don't get this perspective. Is it all because Apple has a smaller ad business than Google?

No it has a lot more to do with how they've handled government requests to expose their customer's data. Even under extreme public pressure (essentially defending a blatant terrorist): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple%E2%80%93FBI_encryption_dispute

Are we talking about the same Apple that did this? https://www.reuters.com/article/world/exclusive-apple-dropped-plan-for-encrypting-backups-after-fbi-complained-sour-idUSKBN1ZK1CO/

So is the bar "a company that sometimes bends over for law enforcement and sometimes does not"? Are we keeping score of how many times each instance happened? What's the leaderboard looking like for Google?

Are you saying Apple doesn't do this? https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-complies-percent-us-government-requests-customer-data-2020-1

I challenge you: Every time you think Apple did something uniquely good, check if Google also did the same. Every time you think Google did something uniquely bad, check if Apple did the same. They both operate inside the same legal/capitalist structures and behave the same. Only substantial difference is Apple is much better at marketing/building a cult, and Google has Project Zero which reports a ton of bugs to Apple without reciprocation.

I agree. You don’t need to convince me that corporations are evil, that’s my default mindset. But at the time I switched, Apple was protecting its customers, and Google had tellingly just changed its slogan away from “don’t be evil”. I voted with my wallet, which is all I can do.
