I wonder how much of that difference is comparative advantage for the cheap stuff vs unforced price increases from policy decisions for the expensive stuff produced here

Answer was tongue in cheek. But objectively it’s both: Global supply chains, cheap labor gave us cheap consumer goods. Overregulation and political processes gave us expensive stuff at home.
