the last book has been a work in progress for over a decade, apparently he had a sizeable manuscript for the 6th book completed in 2012 and that's the last real update from him I heard

It really world!  I don't think its ever happened this way. With the first books being written and then turned into a movie or TV series before the entire book series was completed. Definitely seems to have messed with the creative flow of it all.

Yes 😁  Then again, I really have a bad habit of not watching the last season of my favourite shows. Like Naruto (Do you watch anime?) I'm such an avid fan of Naruto that I couldn't bring myself to watch the last season when it came out back when I was in college, coz it means it's done, finito, that chapter has ended and it's sad 😆

For real, I loved some of the characters in the book that didn't make it into the show. Really hope it does end better than that rushed mess.

Last I looked, The Winds of Winter was still in progress. They're massive books, but holy shit he is incredibly slow. I think Dance With Dragons came out in 2011? There's serious concern from readers that he will pass away before finishing the series, even though there are only two more planned novels in it.

I think he has the outline and he said he has absolutely not given up but since he keeps getting distracted I don't think he'll finish them before he dies unfortunately. But he's good at making his working docs public so there's hope
