Listen, everyone is a critic and a Monday morning quarterback but I feel like channels were such a big missed opportunity for Farcaster. For the protocol and the client. Under-invested and not explored nearly long enough to definitively say they wouldn’t grow DAU, imo.

As a relatively new user, I tried to refrain from a strong opinion about channels. But the tipping point for me now is seeing how much I choose to cast from Farcaster over Base, in large part because of channels.

🎯 imo channels are the non-consensus moonshot for fc to breakout. They give a great opportunity to solve at the intersection of social, communities and money. @cura is taking a shot at this. happy to send u our channels notion doc if ure keen to contribute.

Twitter Communities has been pretty nice for some topics tbh Feels like channels with actual reach As someone that used Reddit a lot two crypto cycles ago, I still quite like the idea of subreddits/channels - don't need to grow an audience for a specific topic, just gotta post good content...

I have shared this with @sahil, and I have also described parts of the concept in older casts. This is my idea on how channels should be implemented. It's very simple, it's protocol-based, and even allows users to use clients that are not aware of the design. It could also be implemented today, without support from Farcaster. The only major drawback is that the design is not compatible with the current channel implementation (based on FIP-2). But we are early, and I think we can make breaking changes, if it makes sense. We should not be tied forever to a design that is not even part of the protocol, if it doesn't work. https://gist.github.com/vrypan/3cb9c7cbc380fa29e3b3e1293f001161

the single most invested feature both in terms of ours and duration that we've built though what would you change from what they are today?

Personally if I was engineering farcaster, I would add a way to do metadata topics on casts. I don't want channels, but a way to signal and help other devs organize casts sort of like RSS. I still predict AI and other stats will help organize and surface casts for clients, but without some kind of native tagging this is much harder. Maybe we need to bring back hashtags?

Channels are so much better for discovery. I can quickly scan my feed to know what they are before reading the post.

Totally agree. They especially help to make connections and find great content when the user base is smaller than other socials
