Yupā¦
Volunteerism is great, until itās not. Like, yeah, helping others is beautiful in theory,,, Community-based generosity, giving time over money, care over clout, all of that is real. But the moment the entire systems start depending on volunteerism to function, weāve crossed into something darker. Thatās no longer help, itās unpaid labor masking as goodwill
Itās exactly like what @cameron said, āweaponized incompetenceā
š āOh, youāre just better at emotional laborāā¦
āYouāre just more organizedāā¦āYouāre so passionate about helping people, go ahead!ā
Nah, thatās just someone outsourcing responsibility and calling it praise
Think of nonprofits organizations that couldnāt operate without a stream of unpaid interns
Or schools relying on āmoms who careā to run entire events
Or disaster relief depending on ordinary people to organize food, clothes, shelter ⦠š³ 1 reply

Thatās not volunteerism, thatās the system shrugging and going, you got this, right?
And people do it out of love, care, hope, but it doesnāt mean they should be expected to
Iām not saying donāt volunteer. I do think showing up for each other in non-transactional ways is one of the most powerful things humans can do. But if we rely on it instead of building real support, paying people fairly, or creating sustainable systems, it becomes a patch for a sinking boat. And eventually, people burn out. And then what??? š®āšØš®āšØ 0 reply
