Yup…
Volunteerism is great, until it’s not. Like, yeah, helping others is beautiful in theory,,, Community-based generosity, giving time over money, care over clout, all of that is real. But the moment the entire systems start depending on volunteerism to function, we’ve crossed into something darker. That’s no longer help, it’s unpaid labor masking as goodwill
It’s exactly like what @cameron said, “weaponized incompetence”
🙄 “Oh, you’re just better at emotional labor”…
“You’re just more organized”…“You’re so passionate about helping people, go ahead!”
Nah, that’s just someone outsourcing responsibility and calling it praise
Think of nonprofits organizations that couldn’t operate without a stream of unpaid interns
Or schools relying on “moms who care” to run entire events
Or disaster relief depending on ordinary people to organize food, clothes, shelter … 😳 1 reply

That’s not volunteerism, that’s the system shrugging and going, you got this, right?
And people do it out of love, care, hope, but it doesn’t mean they should be expected to
I’m not saying don’t volunteer. I do think showing up for each other in non-transactional ways is one of the most powerful things humans can do. But if we rely on it instead of building real support, paying people fairly, or creating sustainable systems, it becomes a patch for a sinking boat. And eventually, people burn out. And then what??? 😮💨😮💨 0 reply
