Yesterday I was disappointed that my friends’ 10 year old daughter was banned from using any AI to aid her in her projects. Apparently her teacher thinks it’s too easy to cheat with it, so it’s totally banned. So I was showing her how to use ChatGPT (with her parents permission ofc), making different photos together, showing her how I use it to make candle scents and measure items. Disappointing schools are not teaching kids how to use AI, feels like they’re failing them.

Teachers are being lazy and do not want to be creative on how to test their students.

Not necessarily—they want to make sure they can think on their own. Biggest thing lacking for anyone who grew up with tech in their pocket is critical thinking skills. (I’ve been teaching 20-somethings for 15 yrs — it’s been declining each year)

Didn't know you were a teacher, but I had a feeling when we meet. You're so caring and accommodating like a facilitator. Regarding the response, I respectfully disagree. AI can actually help with critical thinking, the problem for the teacher is to test and motivating for the critical thinking. Respectfully disagree back 🤣 you need the basics of problem solving & critical thinking before incorporating AI so at age 10 like samantha is taking about here, I totally understand banning ai in class work to ensure that students can think for themselves. By the time I get them (college) you can see the deficits and it’s much harder to teach that. I completely changed my curriculum in Jan 2023 because of chatgpt — I now do most assignments in class. Otherwise it’s AI slop submitted by students with no thinking activated. I actually use AI in class and allow for it in some assignments but if those skills aren’t developed young we are screwed. (and so are they)

That's a fair approach. My eldest one is almost 5 yrs old. I'm going to introduce him to AI as soon as he can read sentences, but will only offer AI to research. Something similar to what you do in your class. Also, yesterday, I used the "deep search" mode to explore how AI breaks down a problem in an industry that is completely new to me -- my learning accelerated. I think there is a lesson in there, still extracting through!

The key is the basics are still needed. Yes they need to learn to read, write, math etc and problem solving. Then ai can assist.
