Our culture has a tendency to see accomplished personas as stand-alone success, who did it on their own. Probably also because mentoring as such isn't that common in its original sense. That said, there's plenty of examples of the contrary in classical. One you probably didn't know about: Dvorak & Brahms. I’ve always thought mentorship to be a big part of the classical world, jazz world too! I’ve been so lucky to have amazing mentors and I try to help young composers when I can.
