Been eyeing this special for a while, now in the airport waiting for my flight I got it. Maybe it'll inspire me to start the other mammoth work of his on my shelf: magic mountain.

I'm half way through Magic Mountain. It's a wonderful book, dense and allegorical, but it hasn't eclipsed my first love of his... Buddenbrooks. I wish I had time to read it again but so many books on the shelf!

I started with his Dr Faustus which... i ended up liking a lot, despite initially being a bit confused :'D I found out it's also a sort of him trying to make sense of the rise of national socialism in Germany which forced him into exile. Feels like a timely author to read from, or about. I found a 4 hr documentary about the Mann family as well (unsure whether they ever subbed it) which provided lots of context - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Manns_%E2%80%93_Ein_Jahrhundertroman
