Is your career path linear or nonlinear? Some people have careers that follow a straight line—each job is just a step toward a better role. For others, the path twists and turns, taking unexpected detours. As the world changes, so are career paths. There are a lot more people doing side gigs and starting small businesses. My own career path has been anything but traditional. I skipped college to run a pizza franchise and when that didn’t work out, I taught myself SEO. That led to a combination of side gigs, businesses, and now a more traditional career. My struggles with addiction made this journey more difficult but also taught me invaluable skills that I use everyday. How has your career path shaped you? Has it been a straightforward journey, or has it taken a few unexpected turns along the way? What lessons have you learned?

Definitely non linear for the most part. Tried college, it landed me in kitchens, cooking other people’s food. That led eventually to programming POS systems. The pay sucked though so decided to go for a trade. Became a construction Boilermakers. That part of my career has involved a lot of contract work. I’ve been across Canada working. Oil refineries, gas plants, coal plants, steel mills, nickel mines and Nuclear plants. Sticking it out in Nuclear right now, working in Radiation Protection on a pretty big multi year project. I’m also addicted to Web3 and DAOs, so my career path has led me to working on that stuff part time as I attempt to transition that to full time.

I’ve been very linear in my 9-5 but non linear with a lot of side gigs. I feel like the side gigs have helped me develop a lot of skills that are also benefit my 9-5 which is cool. I’ve always thought it would be sweet to own a digital marketing firm but most of the marketing I’ve done for side gigs has sucked or I just paused all the ads too quick or I just gave up too early. Who knows 😂

I had different career directions. When I was studying at the university as an engineer, I worked as a photographer at weddings. Then I worked in a trucking company, in logistics. Now my work is connected with designers who develop projects for the construction of factories, enterprises, quarries, mines. And crypt is my hobby, which can grow into a new direction of my professions

Your story really shows the strength that comes from adapting and persevering through challenges. Skipping college, running a pizza franchise, teaching yourself SEO, and facing addiction—each of those steps has added layers to your journey and skills that can’t be learned in a classroom. It’s inspiring how you turned those experiences into growth. For me, my path has had its share of twists too. Every turn has taught me something, often in ways I didn’t expect. The best part? Realizing that every experience, no matter how different, shapes us and builds resilience. Thanks for sharing your journey—it’s motivating!

Mine has been almost as linear as it can be. 7 years hr, 2 years health insurance, 1 year hr. The insurance just gave me a leg up on how that process works. Sometimes linear is good, but isn't for every career.

For me, my career path has been so damn Nonlinear but I love it. Went from being a teacher to being a Sales representative to being an Accountant to being a Front-end developer. Now, I’m just staying on the Last two. An accountant and a web dev. Reason I went into tech is because I’m so interested in the Technological advancement of Finances. Still thinking of taking a proper class on Financial analysis, Maybe an Msc

Mine has been straightforward on paper but hadn’t felt straightforward at all. Lot of the challenges we’ve discussed already in my personal life but I’ve managed to keep the career trajectory going in the right direction despite some major challenges. College with Biotechnology Major -> Working in a lab -> PhD Program -> Postdoc -> Scientist track in biopharma

my career path has more twists and turns than a rollercoaster, but I’ve always known what I wanted to do. I still enjoy helping people in an effort to ensure they do things correctly and securely.

My 9-5 has been as linear as it gets. The disruptor is my photography side gig mixed with crypto that has the potential to replace hopefully one day

Definitely non-linear. I am a late diagnosed neurodivergent (ASD/ADHD). Creative, mystic. I have done everything from admin to housecleaning. Finally diving into full time writer/artist, with little veers into tech fascination. I’ve learned that people, community, and passion are my motivation, not money.
