I want to try something new with the pinned cast in /success: encouraging more long form discussion. Read the question below and answer thoughtfully. Let’s spark some real conversations here! There has been a lot of FUD recently about past failure and what that means for future success. With this in mind—what is the most important failure you’ve experienced in life and how did it shape the person you are today? For me, it was losing everything to drug addiction and the criminal justice system. My career, my health, my youth. But through that struggle, I learned to be a much stronger person—much more capable to take on the challenges of life. I wouldn’t change anything as all of it helped shape the person I am today. What about you?

14 years ago i founded Fab, which was one of the fastest growing companies ever. We provided a marketplace for independent product designers to sell directly to consumers. Our team curated. In year 1 we went from $0 to $115M in sales, 12 million users. The company's valuation went from $12M to $40M to $500M to $900M in that time. we then got CRUSHED by Amazon. Early on it took 45 days from time we feature a designer on Fab before it appeared on Amazon. By year 2.5 Amazon had every Fab product on Amazon in 48h w fast free shipping & returns We didn't make it. While some early investors made huge gains on the way up, later investors lost all their money It was the most humbling experience of my lifetime! -- more than most people will ever ever face What has helped me keep going after it is: 1. my team has never wavered. we build great products together 2. investors supported my next projects 3. i love building and am hungry and motivated to win i also now help teach HBS & Oxford classes on the experience
