First, hi Linda!! Our cover design process actually starts with (what else?) words. When we sign a new author we send over an author questionnaire. One part of that questionnaire focuses on how they’d like their book to be represented. Some authors have very specific thoughts on design, but most are happy to let our team run with it. Once the book is finished + edited, the entire team reads it (this is super important—it can’t just be our brilliant managing editor Bec). From there we make a design brief. We try to flag the themes we think lend themselves best to a cover design. Then our team takes that brief and makes a ridiculously detailed moodboard (attaching one from Stewart Brand’s upcoming book so you can see). They have a ton of freedom to explore very different directions, and in general we try to stay out of their way. But we’ll do as many round of feedback amongst ourselves (and when ready, with Patrick and the author) to get to the version of the cover we like best.
