Reminder: the vast majority of users don't care about decentralization. Developers do! And a minority of ideologically principled users care. But the much bigger market is solving user problems. And if you have enough users, developers will be willing to tolerate your centralization.

I do think users will care (maybe not explicitly) about the protocol being permissionless. Kind‘ve what Fred Wilson discussed on stage at FarCon about Twitter being a protocol. Are the protocols that are permissionless but not decentralized? Maybe Hype, Polymarket, and a few others? I have similar concerns about Tempo’s initial validator set. If Tempo becomes huge and validators are centralized, governments could exert force on validators and manipulate the protocol. Honestly maybe decentralization means that the government can’t exert subtle or physical force on your network.

The success of stablecoins, Solana and Base indicates that a lot of people don’t care.
