Reminder: the vast majority of users don't care about decentralization. Developers do! And a minority of ideologically principled users care. But the much bigger market is solving user problems. And if you have enough users, developers will be willing to tolerate your centralization.

@dwr curious if you think users should care though… I know most don’t, especially non-web3 ppl, but shouldn’t they, just a lil?

I don’t care about decentralization in and of itself, I care about the things it enables. Owning your identity, interoperability, censorship resistance, etc If we don’t care about those principles, what’s the point of crypto? Someone could’ve just built a centralized USDC analogue and we would be in the same spot

I do think users will care (maybe not explicitly) about the protocol being permissionless. Kind‘ve what Fred Wilson discussed on stage at FarCon about Twitter being a protocol. Are the protocols that are permissionless but not decentralized? Maybe Hype, Polymarket, and a few others? I have similar concerns about Tempo’s initial validator set. If Tempo becomes huge and validators are centralized, governments could exert force on validators and manipulate the protocol. Honestly maybe decentralization means that the government can’t exert subtle or physical force on your network.

Wonder if developers should care if users don’t. There’s probably an element of developer altruism there

Consumers don't care. But educating people to care is very important Caring about decentralisation is self interest We are where we are because shutting us down wasn't possible. We can permissionlessly issue and trade any asset because decentralisation made it impractical to stop us Users don't care about it. But they should. Educating the next generation of users to not take everything we have now for granted is important too! Compromises will erode our industry's values, slowly. Unless we keep them alive and put them at the center of what we do

Tangentially related, does this mean decentralizing channels and DMs here is as good as dead? Just want to set my expectations accordingly.

Totally agree. Most people don’t want to wrestle with the technical or ideological sides of decentralization — they just want tools that actually make their lives better. That’s been our mindset with what we’re building in Culture Shift. Instead of leading with “decentralization,” we’re focused on solving real problems and creating experiences people care about. The underlying tech can serve the mission, but the mission always comes first.

Blockchain or not, building a compelling product has always been the end game. Blockchain is not a value prop. However, the caveat here is that as people building in this space, we should thrive for the max decentralization while preserving the user experience. If we're not even trying, we might as well just build our product on web2 rails.

That was probably Uniswap’s thinking when they decided not to launch a token in the early days. At that time, there was a strong debate about the lack of real value behind governance tokens. But when more than half of the capital migrated to Sushiswap during DeFi Summer, those theories had to be revisited — and Uniswap eventually launched a token. The reality is that without a governance token, it’s extremely difficult to finance growth and scale in the long run.
