I’m on call for jury duty for federal court… for an entire month. Crazy long time IMO to have to be at the court’s beck and call each week. I had to go in on the first day for 4.5 hours but since then I’ve been calling in each week and haven’t had to return. I’m safe again this week 😮‍💨

Is it just a one time mandatory thing? And is there a penalty when you don't show up?

Yup. You get randomly selected and must serve. You can postpone a few times but eventually your number gets called. There are local and state courts too but this is federal court, it’s called district court and it’s the last court that gets decided by jury before the circuit court and supreme courts which are decided by judges
