everyone suddenly changed their pfps (myself included) and I struggle to immediately recognize people in my feed. it also provoked a though that building an association with the name rather than avatar could be a better approach

I prefer to create an association with the handle (@...) because it cannot change. Avatars and everything that offers the opportunity for change. Change is inherent to it. Things that can change, should and will change.

I’m definitely actively working on doing just that. And it’s quite fun to see how quickly my brain can re associate someone with their pfp. About an hour ago I noticed you changed. And this post immediately already combined with a spark of recognition that it was by you.

That would be a little hard, its like in real life You sometimes dont remember people name but you remember faces!

I think it's an exercise in concentration and repetition to associate a pfp with a name. Often, indeed, the visual is the first thing we see, but it all depends on the person scrolling through the timeline and the interest they have in each post.
