everyone suddenly changed their pfps (myself included) and I struggle to immediately recognize people in my feed.

it also provoked a though that building an association with the name rather than avatar could be a better approach

I think it's an exercise in concentration and repetition to associate a pfp with a name. Often, indeed, the visual is the first thing we see, but it all depends on the person scrolling through the timeline and the interest they have in each post.
