My father in law already understands Bitcoin. He has lived nearly his whole life under a brutal military dictatorship. The benefits of self-sovereign money are obvious.

You can make your job easier by re-framing the conversation to “Why and how do different people use Bitcoin in different way?” It takes the pressure off. You are not defending your use nor are you trying to convince him to use it.
