I went to the city because it “seemed like the right thing to do” — it’s where I could get (high status, interesting, challenging, white collar) employment and it seemed easiest to meet a partner in these dense locations. But I increasingly care less and less about all of that. If I could do it all over again I wouldn’t make any of the same choices. I feel like the rise of disorder is a downward spiral and a doom loop. Nothing ever changes and the initial disorder begets more San Francisco, ever on the forefront, was a preview for the rest of us. Look how little progress they have made, if any https://thecausalfallacy.com/p/its-time-to-talk-about-americas-disorder

Now that you're in the city -- do you have any plans on moving back to the countryside? I generally feel that most people do this route

currently in the process of finding a small town to move to. still not sure which, or where. but my employment is remote, cost of living is my highest priority, and access to outdoor recreation will be the deciding factor. SLC isn't falling apart. bike infrastructure is growing, affordable housing is being built in high density areas, and walkability score is the most improved of any major city since the pandemic. but it is increasingly expensive, and not dog friendly. and homelessness is growing, and being fought more and more aggressively (as in, with bulldozers). lots of reasons to move. lots of reasons to stay. but I want a house on the river. so we out.

the pressure to chase status and the perfect life can drain you and it sucks I hit that same wall about a year after graduation and realized it’s just not working. nothing ever turns out the way it’s supposed to

I think cities CAN be extremely successful but they have to have the right ideologies, for example those of Ayn Rand. The cities spiraling into disarray seem to have the opposite ideology.

Moved to the city a few months ago. Can't say that I want to live here long term and there is considerably more homelessness here than back home, but my experience here has been generally positive. I guess it depends on the city.
