For the longest time, the best use case I could conceive of for AI automating news writing was for financial and market stories -- pieces on quarterly earnings, stock movements, etc. But I just actually read one in an attempt to glean some real information and -- let me tell you -- an illiterate non-English speaker could have written a better and clearer story. This is the most bullish I've felt on the future of human newswriting in a minute.

Luckily AI is being trained on AI slop now so Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s gonna get even dumber

The cynic in me just thinks the prompters arenโ€™t solving for the right problem (yet). Are they creating content for maximum engagement? Maximum transfer of information? Or just trying to crank out a piece on the subject because the actual content is tertiary to the ads that will run next to it?

Totally agree. When it comes to analysis and clearly conveying information, nothing can replace real journalists.

AI should be more of backend augmentation for source-gathering, imho. super-literate audiences are natural stylometrists, so automated writing would only work if the system was finetuned to a particular voice, and even then there's a tradeoff between being episodic/formulaic vs stream-of-consciousness.

I read one too and it made no sense at all. Kinda funny, but also made me feel better about human writers.

Thatโ€™s reassuring fr fr. Shows thereโ€™s still plenty of room for real writers to stand out and add value. AI still has a long way to go with nuance and clarity.
