Hot take: I think channels should be gated by default (e.g Towns). I know Merkle won’t do it, so maybe it’s time to remove them entirely from the FC app, decentralize + let clients experiment. P.S. Right now, they feel more like a distraction, disguised as "community" building playground, but really just topics.

What ya mean? They were membership only when they first launched the current iteration of channels. People quickly asked for public mode.

i know what i meant was it was a dual approach (people obviously chose the safest - obv didn't help growth or alignment). My wish is that they were gated here by default. so: - topics: become what we call now channels - channel becomes a protocol feature, clients can experiment

They were gated by default. Super confusing to new users. Current channels owners don’t want to have to use other clients.

I would are: No one wants to use other clients But many value access to a main social media feed + x (crypto wallet, apps, community/interest chats). Prob will use Channels again for some startup/token community/friends group - but still afraid I put in effort that goes to waste (without good tools, with incoming changes)
