It’s disappointing how the vast majority of futuristic sci-fi worlds we create in cinema resort to these primitive feudal or monarchic societal structures. Only counterexample I can think of is Ready Player One👏. Mad Max sorta-ish, and Silo has checks & balances for like 2 episodes, but these aren’t really futuristic settings. Maybe it’s a business decision, houses & kings are familiar, intuitive, and the business incentives discourage unnecessary risk. But this doesn’t explain why no one grabs the low hanging fruit of true, ambitious sci fi literature that dabbles in decentralized or experimental forms of governance. Just kinda hard for me to care about your vision of some technofuturist world if you default to some regressive obsolete 1000 year old government bc you’re incapable or unwilling to flesh out the ramifications of your parameters. Perhaps the mind of the Hollywood champagne socialist simply cannot comprehend the idea of free will and autonomy

A slight aside, I was joking one time last year that I went to school for physics and math, and at the time when Biden was in office, I was downloading unregulated AI, trading cryptocurrency, and buying and selling data. I found it really strange when it hit me that when I was growing up, counterculture was rap/rock musicians and druggies, but today its high tech and digital. Our world is probably more close to cyberpunks where you sort of have decentralized independent cities, and everything interesting happens on computers. In that world your top tier gangsters are hackers, scammers, and corporate espionage agents which is shockingly close to today, especially when you get the institutional breakdown that we've seen, and are expecting more of. 100 $tipn
