can anyone help me understand why it costs ~$200 to deploy a relatively simple contract on solana?

I assumed it would cost comparable amounts to base (eg cents) and feel like my mental model needs updating

what is the difference in architecture that drives this?

this would be completely brick what we're building (bracky spinning up prediction market contracts for any sports event)

actually, i think that my experience behind the creation of this is worth sharing

this is one of the dev environments where i created this program with the help of claude and chatgpt. i told them "give me step by step instructions" (and write a poem at the beginning of the smart contract). this is the lib.rs, main rust file for the program and its simple functionality - that involves a non fungible quality to it, and an embedded marketplace. but very simple -

i deployed this program using a command. it seems that the deployment created the /target/idl/wallcaster.json file. but it seems that the cursor agents changed the lib.rs. and now i can't verify the contract on solscan. and i can't access its functions. that read/write tab of basescan is not there. and i don't know how to talk to it

so every time i work on the frontend i send this context to the ai and tell it: "i don't know if this is the code i deployed, but it is there and people are transacting on it. help me understand and create around this"

I've used that to reclaim $SOL on every asset I hold on Solana.

@jessepollak Solana requires programs to pay rent to keep it active proportional to the data stored in those accounts. This just means the bigger your program is, the more expensive rent will be for your program to keep it active on the network. 

The good thing about it is the rent is refundable if the program account is closed

the program becomes part of the global state. It is priced highly because  the ram requirements of all solana validators are downstream from this.

But in case your miniapp does not work out you can reclaim most of the funds.

Because they optimise for the state transitions, not storage. They didn’t solve anything, they just introduced a few trade offs like storage costs

they wanted to copy ethereum so hard that they even copied their gas fee structure from 2021

When you deploy a Program (Solana’s version of a smart contract), you’re paying up front for its global state to live onchain forever.

This is called rent exemption.

One key architectural difference:

On Ethereum, devs often use a contract factory (an onchaincontract that deploys new instances of other contracts).

On Solana, that pattern isn’t necessary.

Once a program is deployed, it can create Program Derived Accounts (PDAs), which are custom state accounts tied to specific users or actions. You’re not redeploying code; you’re just spawning new state.

Thanks to tools like Anchor, the program’s IDL (Interface Definition Language, similar to an ABI) allows client SDKs to handle logic that would otherwise require a factory contract.

TLDR:
The developer deploys the program once.

Users interact with new accounts the program creates.

No need to redeploy anything.

So while the initial cost is high the cost to use is low for devs and users.

I don’t know much, but typically solana transactions are kind of (not L1 ETH level) expensive yes?

More reasons why developers will spike into Base once they see the simplicity and the togetherness in here.
