n0Ob question β my first disk break bike... looking for how to make removing the front wheel easier when throwing the bike inside the van without messing up the front breaks. Local bike shop said "don't lose the little insert" that came with the bike to pop back in every time but that seems like something I will certainly fail at.

I have a roof rack but often end up throwing mine in the back of my SUV if it isn't too dirty. I remove the front wheel, replace the thru-axle in the fork to support it, and lean the bike towards the drive side so the front caliper is elevated off the floor. I then wedge the wheel in there next to the frame with an old towel or blanket in between so that it isn't in danger of hitting anything. The key is just making sure the brake parts won't get bumped in transit. IMO: Inserts for calipers aren't much help for around town transport as long as you are careful since they protect the internals more than the caliper body which should be pretty well attached to the fork. If it's quick release disk, there's often an axle insert that comes with forks in the original packaging that's maybe slightly more helpful as protection. I never bother with either and have been fine. Maybe just leave that thing in a special place in the back of your van, or better yet, secure it with a long string, if you plan to use it there.

Hey what bike is it? To your question, if the bike has thru axles, which I assume since it's a modern bike, all you'll need to mount and dismount it is a 6mm hex key. The "little insert" you mention is nothing more than a 6mm hex key, so if you lose it it's no big deal.

I picked these up in case I lose some. They clip in pretty solid. https://www.amazon.com/Maxmoral-Bicycle-Hydraulic-Spreader-Instert/dp/B09N79DR4C
