I want to like science fiction, but I have 2 issues with most science fiction:

1. Sci-fi movies have spoiled my with the vivid and amazing scenes. My imagination just isn't that good. I had a hard time visualizing some of these worlds.
2. Character development is often pretty weak. I need characters with real depth and maybe even a sense of humor.

Any recommendations there? Haven't found a good one in a long time.

i love the story so so much it’s so dear to me. the original should be an easy landing back into the genre:)

It is a crime I haven't read the original, tbh. I feel like I know the story so well.

i have no imagination at all actually, but i still read quite a fair bit of sci fi! might want to start with some of the classics, like A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

i think you would like A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine

It ramps up in the final act if you can get there. 

I also really liked Sea of Tranquility

Actually I recently got into The Dispossessed but half way through I found myself kinda disnegaged. Wasn't sure I felt like I knew why I was reading anymore as there didn't seem to be any drama.

Haven't given up but was feeling uninspired.

What have you read recently? Have you read the old classics?

Martian was ok but the writing was hack. Luckily the science and story was solid or it would have fallen to pieces.

Martian was maybe best thing recently but that was like 12 years ago.

I may try Solaris. Sounds like my style. Psychological.

I like Roadside Picnic OK.

May look for a good spy novel, but so much slop in that genre and not one I frequent. Read Shibumi a few years ago and that was epic.

This sounds familiar but the best science fiction I’ve ever read was by Connie Willis. Haven’t read her in years because I kind of gave up on the genre, but I’d definitely try reading her again.
