If you're a founder thinking about branding, read this. This past week I've been panicking about my branding. After talking to many designers, I realized that I do not have a vision for branding, and thus, cannot translate that into a good design brief for others to build on. One characteristic of me is that I hate being bad at something. So today, I consumed 220/356 pages of Alina Wheeler's Wiley Textbook "Designing Brand Identity: An Essential Guide", to brute force my learning. Secondly, I need to work with people who ask me the right questions, and pull the right answers out of me. I did this at my previous Chief of Staff job. I find working with other sr. folk, they ascribe solutions to most situations, but I believe the process of picking the correct path should involve asking more questions. So how do I ask myself the right questions? To do this, I consolidated the textbook into 22 pages of handwritten notes (and screenshots), which you can view here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y8P6jWBrGxudValhK6UuVnZTF-32MGiNl1WYmcDpuWU/edit?tab=t.0. I believe that I needed a bigger set of data to understand the variables necessary to build my brand. And that by taking notes from the textbook, I could narrow in on the most important factors to think about. I'm sure I could've inputted the entire book into ChatGPT and asked it to extract the learnings, but then I wouldn't be able to filter out good and bad advice. Second, I fed my notes into ChatGPT, and created a list of questions to ask myself. This was a super helpful for me to narrow down my vision of how I see my branding. You can take a copy of this document and try to input your own brand, it was a great exercise for me. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iMpow6kdwQoMh8Mq3uVZ01xyIgf1YT7X/edit

this is kind of amazing! I think so many problems boil down to knowing the right questions to ask, and is often easier to do as an outsider.

I don’t really think that insider vs outsider makes a difference, but I do think asking the right questions is hard for everyone.
