Why does a thermos work so much better for cold than hot? Is it easier to cool a liquid than heat it?

The city shutoff our water today because of “illegal consumption.” They said we turned our water back on illegally, except we’ve paid every bill on time (autopay) and never asked for it to be turned off. And anyway, I think I would remember walking out to the sidewalk with a 6 foot long socket wrench, lifting up the ir...

I really like that definition of integrity. The way to ameliorate failure is to accept it, acknowledge it, and make it part of who we are. We’re all going to make mistakes and we won’t get better if we pretend we are perfect. Reminds me of blog post about mistakes and the pursuit, or not, of perfection.

Mastery of GenAI does not require being terminally online, in fact that’s probably holding you back (and stressing you out). You need to understand how it all works. Spend your time learning about the core concepts from token prediction to the agentic loop with tool calling. Eventually let your curiosity make you go d

I’m getting annoyed with newsletters/blogs that don’t provide an rss feed. Why would I want to read an article or essay in a crappy, bloated client optimized for spam mail? How does that benefit the writer?

I was listening to the Jason Fried interview from a couple weeks ago and there’s this portion about how psychedelics enabled him to flip a problem around and look at it from the back. “The front of things are fronts, the back of things are real.” I hate to relegate you all to the dusty, back halls of my memory, but it...

A truly humbling thing for an architect to do is to be their own client for a project. We spend so much of our time with capricious clients who throw out months of work when the algo feeds them a new Pinterest image. It can be hard to understand the thought process that leads clients to shoot themselves in the foot, bu...
