Having multiple pfps in a row actually does a lot for this screen. Didn't want to converge to all the other social apps, but we've gone through a bunch of iterations and there's no better outcome than seeing friends.

semi-blindly copying other social apps is a very reasonable default. they've all gone through intense selection pressure to arrive at their current design and its close to optimal (assuming your goals are the same) same reason most cars look alike now -- revealed pref is ppl care more about fuel efficiency than looks that said, thoughtful deviations from the default can make a big difference in how ppl use and remember your app. @erica has great taste in this
