Is airplane mode actually necessary while flying?

No. Otherwise we’d experience the consequences of my forgetting.

I put my phone in airplane mode all the time but can’t figure out how to make it fly Every time I throw it, it keeps coming back down 😮‍💨

If you're not in airplane mode, your phone is going to keep looking for towers, which can drain power faster than is ideal. It can also make it take longer to connect to service once on the ground because the phone has learned that there aren't towers around, and you'll need to reboot or wait to get service back.

Seems like it's necessary to have MOST / MANY devices turned off, but not ALL of them, so typically we get by just fine... https://www.cntraveller.com/article/the-real-reason-you-cant-use-your-phone-on-a-plane

Supposedly it hasn’t been necessary for 20 years.
