I'm sorry, but if you actually believe that the Sidney Sweeney ad where it says she has good genes is an effort to promote Nazism and / or white supremacy, you have succumbed to brain rot.

Obviously, people will find fault with everything because social media rewards conflict, but as a communicator, if a huge portion of your audience has received an unintentional message from you then it's on you to clarify. 

In a moment where ICE kidnaps brown US citizens, it does seem like American Eagle is clearly picking a side (if a blue-eyed blonde has good genes, who has bad genes?) and I think that's what the backlash is really about.  I think they'll suffer in the same way Target has, but I guess we'll see.

I do also think there would have been some backlash if it was a Zendaya instead of Sweeney in the same way people got mad about The Little Mermaid or Ironheart, etc.

It's really hard for companies to be non-political at the moment,  so it's up to them to clearly communicate their values,  etc.
