It's about control. It has been Republican gripe for a while that universities are too leftist and discriminate against white male students. For the past few years, right wing YouTubers and pundits would parade stats showing how white men's college enrollment was dropping and all the cool spots were being taken by 'people of color' and women. This was a major part of their push against DEI. When pro-Palestine protests happened across campuses under Biden, instead of handling it non violently, the admin totally screwed it up, sending cops that looked like stormtrooper into campuses and arresting students and teachers violently. We all saw those videos. The side effects of that was that campuses became extremely polarized. Columbia was one of the first to cave, they let cops in and gave Feds the details of its students. Despite that, Columbia was accused of being anti semitic. When the Trump admin came, the issue was already hot. He saw a great opportunity to control campuses. Columbia had already caved 1/x

Under Biden. Trump used their pliability to put more pressure on them and get more out of them. They threatened them with stopping fed funds and got everything they wanted. (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/21/columbia-university-funding-trump-demands) Trump DOE sent similar demands to Harvard, and later 60 other universities. They wanted an end to DEI, get student data, and let DOE (run by the wrestling guy Vince McMahon's wife) dictate some of the courses of studies. All this was done on the pretext that these universities had become a hotbed for anti semitism, which the Trump admin vowed to end. (https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-educations-office-civil-rights-sends-letters-60-universities-under-investigation-antisemitic-discrimination-and-harassment) Harvard declined. They said they won't give Trump an inch. 2/x

Trump says he wants end of DEI, change in courses, and name# of students who protested, and end to campus anti semitism. When Harvard did not budge, they stopped it federal funding, Harvard sued, that case is in court. When court did not throw out the case like Trump wanted, the admin started using more tools at their disposal. One of them is SEVIS - this allows universities to apply for visas via state dept on behalf of international students. Trump has now stopped that, Harvard went to court again and got a stay. These cases will now decide how much influence Fed govt gets to have over these universities. Columbia looks really bad in all this cuz they caved immediately and Harvard did not. Harvard correctly thought that if they give an inch, Trump will take a mile. And this is where we are at right now. Btw, one tiktok theory that I really love is that Barron got rejected from Harvard and this is revenge for that. It's plausible, I don't think NYU is anyone's first choice. - end -

Yes we can say that. But that language was first used by the Biden administration. When the brutality of war in Gaza became apparent and campuses all over the country erupted in protests, Biden admin called it "anti semitism on campus" to justify the violent crackdown that followed.
