Its a pretty interesting one if you ask me So Trump’s administration is slashing all federal funding to Harvard. like we’re talking $100 million saying the school isn’t protecting Jewish students, is being unfair in admissions and hiring, and is too obsessed with diversity stuff. Oh, and they’re also threatening to block Harvard from hosting international students since like 1 in 4 students there are from abroad! But Harvard is responding by lawyering up, saying Trump’s trying to bully them into changing how they run the place. They claim it’s about protecting academic freedom and keeping politics out of the classroom. Honestly, it’s like watching a messy breakup involving money, lawsuits, and plenty of drama🥲. And the whole higher ed world is watching, because if Trump gets his way here, other universities could be next.

The Trump administration froze over $2 billion in federal funding for Harvard University after it refused to comply with certain demands. The demands included eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, banning face coverings during campus protests, implementing merit-based hiring and admissions,to name a few. Harvard filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming the freeze on research funding was unconstitutional and unlawful.

It's about control. It has been Republican gripe for a while that universities are too leftist and discriminate against white male students. For the past few years, right wing YouTubers and pundits would parade stats showing how white men's college enrollment was dropping and all the cool spots were being taken by 'people of color' and women. This was a major part of their push against DEI. When pro-Palestine protests happened across campuses under Biden, instead of handling it non violently, the admin totally screwed it up, sending cops that looked like stormtrooper into campuses and arresting students and teachers violently. We all saw those videos. The side effects of that was that campuses became extremely polarized. Columbia was one of the first to cave, they let cops in and gave Feds the details of its students. Despite that, Columbia was accused of being anti semitic. When the Trump admin came, the issue was already hot. He saw a great opportunity to control campuses. Columbia had already caved 1/x

one sharp outcome of funding being removed a lot of the funds in the Harvard endowment are earmarked for specific uses (eg. low-income students grants) and it's a big number, ~70% of the endowment is made up of restricted funds and then of the unrestricted, a lot of those funds are tied up in long-term investments that you wouldn't want to sell quickly so when this liquid cash dries up, it actually might force them to sell things at poor prices or do what they're doing now.. borrowing the problem with borrowing is that it might dry up future donations as donors who often actually do have altruistic motives don't just want to be giving money to pay off an interest expense

Donald Trump has frozen federal funds to Harvard and attempted to freeze the enrollment of foreign students (I think through freezing the visas or saying going to Harvard won’t qualify for the student Visa). He has done this because he thinks that Harvard has propagated anti-semitism. Harvard also lost a court case regarding dei and affirmative action thresholds in the last decade and have found other ways to try and skirt that ruling by asking questions about diversity in the essay portion of the applications process. Those on the right view this as them trying to continue DEI practices in opposition to the court ruling. It’s not really clear if what’s happening is constitutional. But it would also be disingenuous to say that Harvard hasn’t attempted to skirt a Supreme Court ruling. There is speculation that freezing funds to Harvard, making their endowment taxable, or banning international students will likely cause repercussions such as taxation of religion when democrats take office.

Harvard is a perfect candidate to make an example of higher ed not bending the knee. - strongest brand (all other universities look up to them) - huge funding budget (seen as overspending) - lots of international students (with diverse non US nationalist POV) Kill the head the body will die strategy

Alright, it's been a while since I followed American politics but Trump always starts good drama. From the top: We all remember Trumps holy war against DEI. Since he got elected, one of his first actions was to abolish the DEI practice in leftist organisations all over the US. And this is backed with a Supreme Court order. So Trump sent a letter to Harvard with some demands: - to abolish DEI admissions and hiring - to clamp down on antisemitism on campus - to ban students who are hostile to the American values - to provide audits of the political ideology of students and faculty to ensure “viewpoint diversity" Harvard rejected this on the grounds that it "exceeds legal authority". The administration also tried to revoke Harvard's rights to admit international students but tough luck on that side as well. Now, Trump had the options of a stick and a carrot: The stick: punish them into submission The carrot: nudge them and try to convince them into agreement.

Orange person in power withholds funding when prestigious college doesn’t listen to his demands - because he’s in the pocket of an org and leader who fights for an apartheid state to not have their actions been seen and protested. (Maybe not objective, but at least factual)
