Makes sense to me. Both parties are being run by people who are way too old to be making decisions for people in their 20s. If you statistically won't be alive in 20 years to feel the effects of your policies, you have no business being in Congress.

maybe could throw it off a bit, but the same demographic is the main consumer of the NYT/PBS. need to find a good data source though.

Hmm the cross tabs on these have small samples. The only effect here Iโ€™d trust is more independents / less formal party membership w each generation. The actual partisan lean is all over the place.

Where did they find these 212 18-29 willing to answer a political poll? Would be more curious to see how this has shifted over time, generally assumed younger folks are less engaged in primaries and therefore less likely to be registered for one party or the other.

Progressive v Conservative are the closest party labels I hear consistently in my age cohort (18-29). Folks don't want the baggage that comes with applying these labels to their identity.

This isn't surprising at all. Being affiliated with either of the parties is increasingly unpopular. The real question is - how are all the people calling themselves independent going to vote? My guess is the majority of the 40% of 12-29 year olds skew to the left. It remains to be seen whether they hold their noses and vote for Harris, cast a meaningless protest vote for Jill Stein, or just forget to vote like they usually do.

same trend as republican, doesn't seem like a party thing. more interesting is the opposite skew in independents. could be that younger generations don't see themselves as partisan in the traditional sense anymore.

I've interacted with a lot of age 65+ Democrats lately. They have what I would consider moderate to "right-wing" opinions on many things like crime, the border, and gender, but they watch MSNBC all day and will keep voting Democrat on autopilot for the rest of their lives, thinking it's still the party of Bill Clinton.

Young people donโ€™t have any allegiance to the old social orders. We vote based on what we believe, but when we are walking down the street thatโ€™s not apart of our identity. I think itโ€™s called barstool politics. You donโ€™t wear it so proudly. Because what happens at the bar stays at the bar.

What's wild to me is that anyone looks at this data and thinks anything other than: Young ppl reject both main parties across the board. The 4% diff between them is negligible compared to the >50% majority that reject both parties.
