They switched image hosting providers, I think they used imgur and switched to imagedelivery which is Cloudflare. But if I catch your drift, I agree that IPFS would be nice, I remember it's been discussed in the past...but it would need some caching magic to make it work with low latency. I guess a frame would also work.

tho not my intension, and not to sound like a broken record, but I would prefer if my posts and all the embedded media where stored in my personal data store. Especially important for brand accounts. Whether or not the PDS pins them via IPFS is an implementation detail that I don't have strong opinions about (yet)..
