The mean is sensitive to very high incomes, and the top 0.01% (which includes about 16,000 households) dramatically increases the average. While the exact reduction depends on the aggregate income of those top 1,000 individuals, the overall average would drop, but not drastically, given the size of the U.S. population. For context, the average personal income is reported between $54,000 and $63,214. Removing the top 1,000 would bring the mean closer to the median, but the median would remain the more representative figure for a "typical" individual. 2/2
