Not having the ability to post a single cast in more than one channel is holding Farcaster back.

Just think about it. Some topics are umbrella topics for others: âą /music for /classical /electronic /videogamemusic âąÂ /dev for /frontend /backend /evm âą /farcaster for /fc-updates /fc-devs /miniapps âą Continents/countries/cities like /europoooooor /sea /america /prague /los-angeles

Some topics apply to every place and walk of life. /food. /travel. /itookaphoto /itookavideo. Others are temporary Schelling Points for discussions about other topics, many of which end up becoming timeless. Think /podcasts, /events, /hackathons like /ethglobal, or conferences like /apple /devcon /ethdenver.

But right now I'm forced to choose between an umbrella channel with thousands of followers, and a niche channel with effectively tens. Both feel like equally casting into the void. "Crossposting" by quotecasting my own cast doesn't help, because it fractures engagement and the original content is obscured by an embed.

For Farcaster to truly become the one true social network and reflect all the rich experiences we have to share, we NEED to stop siloing interesting content into one-dimensional channels. Allowing a top-level cast to exist in multiple channels would fix all of these discovery problems once and for all.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Now to figure out whether to quotecast my /svelte news in /frontend, or my /frontend news in /svelte, or my national news in /america or /usa, or my /dev news in /opensource or /localfirst or /computerscience or /vibecoding or /aichannel or /theai or /ai, or...

"But channels are not hashtags" I daresay real hashtags haven't been tried. We have so many new primitives at our disposal: LLMs, channel permissions, social reputation. Surely there's a cozy middle in between hashtag anarchy and what we have now, which is content trapped in undiscoverable silos and a home feed that doesn't feel shaped to my interests.
